The Highest-Rated Game of the Year is Officially Out Now, but You Can't Play It on PS5 or Xbox

Hades 2 is the highest-rated new game release of 2025 so far, but unfortunately, it is not playable on PS5 or Xbox at the time of this writing. Hades 2‘s 1.0 launch comes five years after the release of the original critically-acclaimed roguelike game. Like its predecessor, Hades 2 has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it follows in the footsteps of the original in other ways as well.

After spending some time in early access, the original Hades released its 1.0 version on PC and the Nintendo Switch as a timed-exclusive for Nintendo’s home console/handheld hybrid. About a year later, Hades made its way to PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and then a few years after that, found itself ported to iOS devices as well. Hades 2 seems to be following a similar path, as while the 1.0 version is out now, it’s not on PS5 or Xbox just yet.

Hades 2 1.0 is available now for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, once again console-exclusive to Nintendo platforms. The Hades 2 Switch console exclusivity window has not been revealed in any official capacity, but the first game was console exclusive for a whopping 11 months. It’s possible Hades 2 will hit PlayStation and Xbox before the year is out, but the more likely scenario is that the game will release for those platforms at some point in 2026. Until Supergiant Games decides to reveal more information about its plans for the PS5 and Xbox versions of Hades 2, all fans can do is guess. What makes the wait for more info on the Hades 2 PS5 and Xbox ports is the fact that it is currently the highest-rated new game release of 2025.

Hades 2 is the Highest-Rated Game of 2025 So Far

  1. Hades 2 – 94
  2. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 93
  3. Hollow Knight: Silksong – 92
  4. Blue Prince – 92
  5. Split Fiction – 91
  6. Donkey Kong Bananza – 91
  7. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – 90

On review aggregate site Metacritic, Hades 2 has secured an impressive 94 rating, putting it ahead of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s 93, the 92 overall scores enjoyed by Hollow Knight: Silksong and Blue Prince, the 91s earned by Split Fiction and Donkey Kong Bananza, and the 90 secured by Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter. On OpenCritic, the scores are a little different because different reviews are counted, but that site has Hades 2, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Hollow Knight: Silksong all tied at 92.

It’s definitely disappointing that PS5 and Xbox gamers are currently unable to play 2025’s highest-rated game, but on the flip side, some of the year’s critically-acclaimed games aren’t playable on Switch and Switch 2. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 doesn’t have a Switch version just yet, and the same goes for Blue Prince. All the highest-rated games of 2025 are playable on PC, but console gamers will need to own multiple current-gen systems if they hope to play all the latest hits.
